WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE STRAWBERRY MARGARITAS ON THE ROCKS?

  • Tequila
  • Orange Liqueur
  • Strawberry Simple Syrup
  • Ice

THE TEQUILA

You can use whichever type of tequila you prefer for a margarita, My go-to tequila for making margaritas is Herradura Silver. Blanco (a.k.a. silver) tequilas are light and heir on the side of citrusy and herbal, and they pair well with the light, citrusy vibes of a margarita.

The next tequila in line for the margarita is called a Reposado. Reposados are more aged than silver tequila, less herbal, and often carry notes of vanilla, brown sugar, and oak.

AƱejos tequilas have been aged for an extended period in oak barrels. They are very strong in flavor, with notes of wood and burnt caramel, and I do not recommend using them for fresh Strawberry Margaritas! Stick with Blancos or Reposado tequilas for this recipe.

THE LIQUEUR

When choosing the liqueur for your Strawberry Margaritas On the Rocks, spring for the good stuff if you can. Low-budget triple secs are often pungently sweet and overpowering in artificial flavor. You're much better off with a liqueur such as Cointreau or Grand Marnier.

And, while Cointreau is indeed considered a Triple Sec, it is on the dryer side, with smooth, complex flavors.

THE SIMPLE SYRUP

Time to put a little strawberry in this Strawberry Margarita Recipe! Actually, let's put a lot of strawberries in them.

A bottle of simple syrup with strawberries, sugar, and limes off to the side.

The Strawberry Simple Syrup serves as the base of the cocktail and it is rich in strawberry flavor. You can count on it to make your margaritas over the top delicious!

Here's what you'll need to make it:

  • Strawberries (stems removed and halved)
  • Water
  • Granulated sugar
  • Salt
  • Freshly squeezed lime juice

This recipe makes about 3 1/2 cups of simple syrup; you will need 4 ounces (which equals a 1/2 cup) per Strawberry Margarita. This is enough for 6 to 8 margaritas, depending on the size of your glassware.

If you end up with leftovers, store it in the fridge for up to 2 weeks or freeze it for up to 2 months.

CAN I USE THIS RECIPE FOR OTHER TYPES OF MARGARITAS?

The strawberry simple syrup is where all of the strawberry flavor comes from, if you want to make just about any other fruit-flavored margarita, just sub in about 2 cups of different fruit in the place of strawberries!

Fruits that would work well as a substitution and pair well with tequila are blackberries, mango, peach, and raspberry!

HOW TO ADD A SUGAR OR SALT RIM TO A MARGARITA

If you want to serve up an extra special Strawberry Margaritas On the Rocks, consider a salt or sugar rim for your glass!

Here's it's done:

  1. Ready the Plate | Have ready a small plate with either a 1/3 cup of Kosher salt or granulated sugar. You won't use all of it, but you want to be able to swirl it around and get a really good, generous coating on the rim of the glass.
  2. Cut the Lime | Cut a lime into wedges and cut a slit down the center of the wedge.
  3. Wet the Rim | Take the lime wedge and run the slit around the rim of the glass.
  4. Swirl | Turn the glass upside down and generously swirl it in the sugar or salt until a nice thick, coating adheres!

Take note, you want to add your salt or sugar rim before putting ice in the glass.

GARNISH IDEAS FOR A STRAWBERRY MARGARITA

There are lots of different ways to garnish a strawberry margarita. The addition of a lime wedge, a lime wheel, or even a small strawberry makes for an extra special presentation.

HOW TO MAKE A PITCHER OF STRAWBERRY MARGARITAS (ON THE ROCKS)

If you don't want to play bartender at your party, go for a pitcher of margaritas rather than mixing them up individually. Here are the quantities for a pitcher of Strawberry Margaritas On the Rocks:

  • 3 1/2 cups Strawberry Simple Syrup (this is how much your recipe will make)
  • 1 cup of tequila
  • 1/2 cup of orange liqueur

Just pour it all in a pitcher, refrigerate until cold, and pour over ice to serve!
